Produce Donations and ICF
Besides eating fresh, delicious, organic vegetables and enjoying the beauty of a summer afternoon in the flowers, many other good things come with your CSA share at Intervale Community Farm.
One of ICF’s longstanding goals is supporting the wider community outside the farm. While this takes many forms, probably our most important activity is donating food. Fresh vegetables can be harder to come by and more costly, and ICF produce helps to fill that need.
In 2024, ICF donated around 10,250lbs of fresh vegetables to our community partners. Donated vegetables are made up of cosmetically imperfect vegetables and overabundant crops, some of which are harvested by ICF farmers, and many of which are picked and processed by our gleaning partners at Vermont Food Bank and Intervale Center. In recent years without major floods, ICF has donated around 30,000 lbs of produce annually.
Though we are disheartened by the need, we hope to resume our prior level of vegetable donations. Your CSA share helps in a small way to support this effort. Thank you!
This Week at the Farm
In the greenhouse: Around April 1, Aly, Will, Georgia and Bella grafted approximately 1,500tomatoes. They went in a healing chamber, and they stayed in the dark for a day before getting their first light after 24 hours. After weaning them into brightness, all the plants were moved back into the prop house. Two weeks later, the plants are all healed and were potted up in much bigger pots. We’ll plant them in our tunnels in just a few weeks after all the winter greens are harvested for the last time.
Don't miss out on our stupendous tomatoes: sign up for your summer share here.
In the fields: Some field prep has started, but we are still harvesting greens from the tunnels for our winter shares (baby kale, kale, baby lettuce, arugula) and will be preparing the tunnels for cucumber seeding and tomato transplanting.
In the shop: Tractor and equipment work continues: oil changes, mechanical repairs, replacing parts. Orders of supplies arrive daily. Also, Cal has been working on the Full Moon Farm box truck so we may use it this summer. Read more about the additional fields where we'll grow potatoes, onions, and squash.
