our team with new tool belts in the tomato tunnel

During our gap weeks between the end of winter shares and the beginning of summer shares, things are busy at ICF.  Spring planting continues apace, while weed control, irrigation, and summer greenhouse crop management get going in earnest.

This week we did our first real pruning of our greenhouse tomatoes with our crackerjack team, and they look great (both the tomatoes and the team!) We are seeing our first flowers and are crossing our fingers for an early start to the tomato season.  It looks like a bountiful harvest ahead!

Peppers and cucumbers are also off and growing in our greenhouses.  The peppers moved from our older narrow tunnels near our pick-your-own fields, over to one of our full-sized greenhouses, which will protect them from flooding, but should also lead to earlier and higher yields.  We are excited that we’ll be adding two more greenhouses on the dry spot this summer, which will provide even more protected space for crops in future years. Learn more about our new tunnel project here.

Outside, we finished planting out most of the cut flowers and it is going to be a great year.   Our first planting of pick-your-own beans went in the ground this week, along with second and third plantings of scallions and fresh herbs.  The Herb Garden and Kid’s Garden each took a big leap forward, as well, setting up your summer garden wandering.

Dry weather helps us weed more effectively, so this week we got after it in many of our field crops: carrots, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, kale, and cabbage in the Intervale, as well as onions and potatoes out at Full Moon Farm in Hinesburg.  The cool, wetter weather was great for crop establishment, but the sunshine plus water really makes things grow, so to the sunshine this week we added irrigation of most of our crops.
