Memorial Day: New Staff and Crop Report

This Week at the Farm

Tomatoes are growing

Though this week had many of us looking for our long underwear again, our crops continue to persevere through the chilly weather.  Our baby salad greens, butterhead lettuce, cilantro, and dill seem to be enjoying this spring, and it has been great for establishment of many of our crops from onions and broccoli, to carrots and flowers.  Even our heat-loving favorites like peppers and cucumbers are managing, and we are starting to see the first fruits on our tomatoes.

Bike repairs

Amazingly, we have less than two weeks to go before we welcome all of you back to Intervale Community Farm!  In addition to planting broccoli, napa, herbs, salad greens, spinach, and carrots this week, we are busily preparing & tidying up:  deep cleaning our harvest containers, trimming up the courtyard, mulching the herb garden, and generally getting ready for all of you.

In parallel with our visual transformation for summer pickups, we are turning over acres preparing for later planted crops like watermelon, cantaloupe, and, pumpkins. Moving our onions, potatoes, and winter squash out of the Intervale has freed up acreage for ICF to focus on soil improving crops that will help us grow better crops in future years, and we are excitedly approaching our early summer plantings of buckwheat, sudangrass, and Crotolaria.

Life is uncertain and farming is unpredictable, but you can be sure that Intervale Community Farm will continue to provide you and your family with delicious local organic vegetables at an affordable and fair price, as we have for 35 years.  We will continue to change and adapt, while always keeping our focus on growing the fresh food that you want.  We are your farm, controlled by you and for you. We look forward to seeing you at the farm in just a couple of weeks. Thank you for being a part of our community!

Meet Our New Staff

George

George is a recent Smith College graduate where they studied environmental science and policy, with a focus on sustainable agriculture and food systems. They have spent the past few summers at various diversified vegetable farms throughout New England. When not farming, George enjoys making art, cooking with friends, hiking, and swimming. They are super excited to join the ICF team for the 2025 season!

Grove

Grove
is originally from Connecticut but moved to Burlington after attending Middlebury College to study agroecology and music. He enjoys painting, playing silly songs on guitar, fiber arts, and playing with his roommate’s cat Seamus. You can find Grove about town participating in mutual aid projects and being goofy. Maybe eventually he will finish drilling holes in the abandoned bathtub in his backyard which will be a new garden.
